On October 1, 2015, 17-year-old Patrick Alfredo Gonzales tragically lost his life in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Born on March 12, 1998, to Debbie Montano and Patrick Gonzales, Patrick was a junior at Tucumcari High School, known for his friendly demeanor and active participation in sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. His untimely death deeply affected the local community, prompting memorials and tributes from classmates and family members.
The incident occurred when Jordan
Walker, then 20 years old, visited Patrick at his residence. According to reports, Walker intended to show Patrick his. 22-250 Remington rifle. As Patrick sat in the driver's seat of his car, with Walker's younger brother, Josh, in the passenger seat, Walker attempted to hand the loaded rifle to Patrick barrel-first. The firearm slipped, causing Walker's finger to engage the trigger, resulting in an unintended discharge. The bullet fatally struck Patrick and seriously injured Josh.
Following the shooting, Tenth Judicial District Attorney Timothy Rose, after consulting with other district attorneys, decided not to pursue criminal charges against Walker. They cited a lack of physical evidence, no eyewitnesses, and insufficient proof of intent to support a theory of intentional killing. Additionally, it was noted that Patrick's actions—grabbing and pulling the barrel—may have contributed to the accidental discharge.
In response to the absence of criminal charges, Patrick's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in July 2017 against Jordan Walker, the owners of the firearm, and the property owners where the incident took place. The lawsuit alleged negligence in firearm handling and safety, seeking accountability for the tragic loss of Patrick's life. The civil case aimed to address the family's pursuit of justice and highlight the responsibilities associated with gun ownership.
Patrick's passing left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and the Tucumcari community. In honor of his memory, dual enrollment students from Tucumcari High School created a memorial website as a final project for their Introduction to Computers class at Mesalands Community College. This tribute served as a testament to Patrick's impact on those around him and the enduring love held for him by his community.
