On a summer morning, what began as a routine patrol on Interstate 40 just west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, took a somber turn. A state police officer, managing traffic from an unrelated incident on June 29, 2017, noticed a blue pickup truck parked on the eastbound shoulder. The officer approached the vehicle to check on the well-being of its occupants and made a tragic discovery.
Inside, 32-year-old Ursula Tammy Kokotkiewicz was found in the passenger seat, and her husband, Jacob Kokotkiewicz, 31, was in the driver's seat.
Both Ursula and her husband had sustained gunshot wounds to the head. A handgun was discovered between Jacob's legs. The couple, who resided in Flower Mound, Texas, were on a road trip, seemingly documenting their travels to national parks on social media in the days leading up to their deaths. Ursula was a beloved English teacher in the Dallas Independent School District, remembered fondly by her students and colleagues.
Investigators with the New Mexico State Police processed the scene and later ruled the deaths a murder-suicide. While the official report did not explicitly state who shot whom, the evidence led authorities to conclude that Jacob Kokotkiewicz was the suspect in his wife's death before taking his own life. Law enforcement officials confirmed that they were not seeking any other suspects in connection with the case. To determine a possible motive for the tragic event, investigators planned to analyze electronic devices found inside the couple's vehicle.
