In the pre-dawn hours of August 31, 2023, the city of Albuquerque was rattled by a burst of gunfire that would leave three people dead, including 35-year-old Genea Oliver, a Black female. The violent encounter unfolded in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Rhode Island Street SE. Responding to a nearby traffic accident around 4:30 a.m., police officers heard the gunshots, their location pinpointed by the city's ShotSpotter system.
Upon their arrival at the 300 block of Rhode Island Street, they discovered a grim scene. Genea Oliver and her brother, Jonathan McGaughy, aged 31, were found deceased next to a silver vehicle. A third victim, 40-year-old Randy Lovett, was found with critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation quickly led police to a man who had fled the scene on foot and was discovered hiding on the roof of a nearby building. This individual was identified as 32-year-old Thomas Clark, Jr. Initially detained on an outstanding felony warrant, Clark was subsequently interviewed by homicide detectives. During the interview, he confessed to the shooting, providing a chilling narrative of the events that had transpired. Clark claimed he was in a car with McGaughy and two other individuals, all of whom he believed were armed. He told detectives that he was overcome with fear, believing the others intended to kill him over rumors that he had been stealing.
According to Clark's account, McGaughy drove them to the apartment complex where his sister, Genea Oliver, resided. Oliver was standing outside the vehicle when the situation escalated. Clark, in a state of panic, said he managed to sneak a handgun into his waistband. He claimed his gun first went off inside the car, striking McGaughy. He then fired through the back passenger window, hitting Oliver as she stood outside. After exiting the vehicle, he saw McGaughy on the pavement reaching for his own gun and shot him again. Clark also admitted to firing several rounds in the direction of what he believed to be return fire, which is likely when Lovett was struck.
Following his confession, Thomas Clark, Jr., was arrested and charged with three open counts of first-degree murder, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence. His legal journey culminated in a trial that lasted eight days. After a short deliberation of less than an hour, a jury found Thomas Clark Jr. guilty of three counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Genea Oliver, Jonathan McGaughy, and Randy Lovett.
