On December 17, 2022, a tragic incident occurred at a house party on the West Side of Albuquerque, New Mexico, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Jada Gonzales, a student at Albuquerque Academy. The event unfolded when a group of five males, who had brought guns to the party, were kicked out after causing disturbances. Following their removal, the group fired shots into the home, with one round striking Jada Gonzales.
She succumbed to her injuries on December 18, 2022.
The investigation into Jada's death led to the identification and subsequent arrest of several suspects. The first group of arrests included four teenagers: Jesse Parra, Cruz Medina, Isaiah Espinoza, and Julian Prieb. These individuals were apprehended in 2023 in connection with the homicide. Each of these suspects was linked to the incident and faced various charges related to the shooting and conspiracy.
The final suspect, Jese Barrios, 19 years old, was arrested on January 11, 2024, at a home on Copper Mountain Trail N.W. in Albuquerque. Barrios was among the group of males who had been kicked out of the house party and subsequently fired shots into the home. He has been charged with an open count of Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Shooting at Dwelling or Occupied Building Conspiracy to commit Shooting at a dwelling or Occupied Building Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle Conspiracy to Shoot at or from a Motor Vehicle and Tampering with Evidence.
The arrests were the result of collaborative efforts between investigative detectives and officers from the Northwest Area Command of the Albuquerque Police Department. The case has been highly publicized due to the tragic nature of the incident and the impact on the community, particularly given Jada's reputation as a promising and beloved student.
In September 2024, emotions ran high in a courtroom as a judge sentenced one of the suspects in connection with Jada's death.
