On February 6, 2020, 75-year-old Jimmy J. Griego was fatally shot at his mother's residence in Tesuque, New Mexico. The tragic incident stemmed from a dispute between Jimmy and his younger brother, 68-year-old Patricio Griego, over the inheritance of their mother's property. During the altercation, Patricio retrieved a firearm and shot Jimmy, resulting in his immediate death.
Following the shooting, Patricio Griego was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
The case proceeded to trial, where the prosecution presented evidence of the familial dispute leading to the fatal encounter. In November 2021, a Santa Fe jury found Patricio guilty of second-degree murder in connection with his brother's death.
Jimmy J. Griego was a lifelong resident of Tesuque, known for his dedication and service to the Santa Fe Opera, where he worked for 42 years in various capacities, including overseeing maintenance and transportation. He was remembered by colleagues for his attention to detail, good humor, and generosity. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Emily Ortega Griego, his mother, Cecilia Griego, and his children, Lisa, Stephanie, and Manuel, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
