In the summer of 2007, a visit home to Brockton, Massachusetts, turned tragic for 27-year-old Carlita T.T. Chaney. On August 16, 2007, the young mother of two was shot and killed. The man responsible for her death was her ex-boyfriend and the father of her children, Amaral Montrond.
The history between Chaney and Montrond was troubled. She had ended their relationship in 2002 and moved away.
In 2006, while living in South Carolina, Chaney provided information to authorities that led to Montrond's arrest for a shooting in Brockton. Ten months later, in the summer of 2007, Montrond was out on bail. Chaney had brought their two children to Brockton to visit with Montrond's family and was staying at his parents' home.
On the evening of August 15, 2007, Chaney was on the phone with her sister and mentioned that Montrond had called her a "snitch." Less than an hour after that phone call, Montrond shot Chaney once in the head as she lay on a couch, killing her instantly.
In November 2009, after an eight-day trial, a jury found Amaral Montrond guilty of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. He was subsequently convicted of being an armed career criminal. For the murder of Carlita Chaney, Montrond received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. In May 2017, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court affirmed his conviction.
