On a cold January evening in 2017, the life of 30-year-old Eugenia Gomes Monteiro was tragically cut short in her Brockton, Massachusetts home. A family member discovered the mother of two on January 9th, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene in her recently purchased Lexington Street residence.
Investigators with the State Police and Brockton Police quickly identified her 38-year-old ex-boyfriend, Matias Andrade, as a person of
interest. A bulletin was issued for his white Honda Civic, which was later located in Boston. The search for Andrade, however, continued throughout the evening.
The investigation revealed a heart-wrenching backstory. Monteiro had recently ended her relationship with Andrade and had started seeing someone new. She had expressed fear for her life to her new boyfriend, sending a text message that Andrade might kill her if he discovered her new relationship. Friends described Monteiro as a kind and helpful person, making the tragedy even more profound for those who knew her.
The manhunt for Andrade came to a grim conclusion late that same night. Following a track of his cell phone signal, officers discovered his body in a wooded area off Route 93 in Braintree. The Plymouth County District Attorney's office stated that Andrade died from an apparent suicide by hanging. Near his body, authorities recovered a weapon that they believe was used in Monteiro's murder. Family members later told police that Andrade had appeared extremely upset when he visited their Dorchester home earlier that day. With the sole suspect in her murder having taken his own life, the case was brought to a somber close.
