In the spring of 1994, the Royal Towers Apartments in Kansas City, a building that should have been a place of safety and community, became the scene of a chilling discovery. On March 30th, the body of 29-year-old Mia Smith, a female resident, was found strangled in a sixth-floor stairway. Her violent death cast a shadow of fear over the other tenants and added to a string of mysterious deaths that had been occurring within the building.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to a
fellow resident, Clifton Ray, who had a history of run-ins with the law and was already on their radar. Ray had moved into the Royal Towers not long before the unsettling series of deaths began. Although police were highly suspicious of his involvement in Mia Smith's murder, they were unable to gather enough evidence to formally charge him in her case. The investigation into her death grew cold, leaving her family and the community without answers or a sense of justice for the vibrant life that had been cut short.
While no one was ever brought to trial for the murder of Mia Smith, Clifton Ray would not escape the consequences of his other violent acts. He was eventually convicted for the murder of another resident of the apartment building, and DNA evidence later linked him to the strangulation deaths of two other women in Kansas City in 1987 and 1990. For these crimes, he was sentenced to life in prison. Despite the strong suspicion of his guilt in multiple other deaths, including Mia's, the charges for her murder were never pursued, and her case remains officially unsolved.
