In the winter of 2015, the city of Brockton, Massachusetts, was struck by a tragedy that claimed the lives of two brothers. David R. Afonso, a 26-year-old Black/African American man, and his older brother, Steven R. Afonso, were fatally shot on January 30, 2015. The brothers were sitting in a black Infiniti sedan near the intersection of Glenwood and Highland streets when the shooting occurred. After being shot, their vehicle crashed into a snowbank.
Both David and his brother were rushed to local hospitals, but they succumbed to their injuries.
David was remembered as a kindhearted and protective individual, with a smile that could light up a room. He was a father who cherished spending time with his son, often playing video games and listening to music together. In his younger years, he practiced Taekwondo and achieved the rank of red belt. His tragic death, alongside his brother, marked the first homicides of 2015 in Brockton, a city that had experienced a significant amount of violence in the preceding year.
The investigation into the deaths of David and Steven Afonso was intensive. Law enforcement officials collected evidence from the scene, including shell casings found near the vehicle. However, despite their efforts, no suspects have ever been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murders. The case remains unsolved, leaving a lingering sense of loss and a desire for justice within the Brockton community and among the family and friends of the two slain brothers.
