In the winter of 2023, the life of a 29-year-old Hispanic/Latino man from Brockton, Massachusetts, named Gelson Fernandes, came to a tragic and violent end. His death was the final chapter in a grim sequence of events that began just days earlier. The story began to unfold in the cold, early hours of Friday, December 8, 2023.
Just after midnight, Brockton police received a 911 call reporting a shooting on Nason Street. When officers arrived, they discovered the body of 22-year-old Stephanie Beatty of Norwich, Connecticut, inside a parked car. She had been fatally shot. Authorities quickly determined that Beatty and Fernandes were acquainted with each other, and the investigation swiftly pointed toward him as the primary suspect. As a result, law enforcement secured an arrest warrant for Gelson Fernandes, charging him with homicide.
With the warrant issued, a search for Fernandes began. The manhunt, however, was short-lived. Overnight on Saturday, December 9, 2023, authorities located him. He was found suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Urgently transported to a local hospital, his condition was initially unknown. Despite medical intervention, Gelson Fernandes did not survive his injuries and he passed away on December 10, 2023. His death brought an end to the homicide investigation, effectively closing the case against him in the death of Stephanie Beatty.
