In the early hours of April 25, 2022, the life of 38-year-old Hispanic male Luis Mendez of Lawrence, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short. Just before 2:00 a.m., police responded to the Market Street area following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mendez suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators later determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence.
The investigation revealed that Mendez had been at a party in the basement of a residence at 210 Market Street when he was fatally shot. In the aftermath of the incident, law enforcement identified a suspect, 27-year-old Jose L. Sanchez. However, before an arrest could be made, Sanchez fled, becoming a fugitive from justice. The investigation into Mendez's death continued, with law enforcement agencies working to locate the man they believed was responsible.
After more than two years on the run, Jose L. Sanchez was apprehended in the Dominican Republic in October of 2024. Following his capture, legal proceedings began to extradite him back to the United States to face charges for the murder of Luis Mendez. In June of 2025, Sanchez was successfully extradited and arraigned in Lawrence District Court. He pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and was ordered to be held without bail, marking a significant development in the long road to justice for Luis Mendez and his family. The case is now set to proceed through the Massachusetts court system.
