In the early morning hours of August 22, 2021, a burst of violence inside a Portland nightclub claimed the life of 25-year-old JaMarie Herring Sr., a Black male. The fatal shooting occurred at 1:48 a.m. inside the Mingle Lounge located in the 300 block of Northwest Everett Street in Old Town. Central Precinct officers who were on patrol were flagged down and directed to the scene where they found Herring with gunshot wounds.
Paramedics treated him in an ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries before reaching a hospital. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office later conducted an autopsy and determined that a gunshot wound was the cause of death, ruling it a homicide.
At the time of the shooting, it was estimated that between 40 and 50 people were inside the Mingle Lounge. However, none of these potential witnesses remained at the scene to speak with the responding officers. The suspect, or suspects, had also fled before the police were notified. In the aftermath of the shooting, a vigil held for Herring on the following night at the same location was tragically interrupted by more gunfire. Just after 11 p.m., a shooting broke out, resulting in five men, aged 21 to 32, being wounded. Investigators believe the victims of the second shooting had been attending the vigil for Herring. Police found evidence that at least 50 rounds had been fired from what they believe to be more than one gun.
The investigation into Herring's death progressed quickly. On the evening of August 23, 2021, 22-year-old Rolando L. Mingledoff Jr. turned himself in to homicide detectives. He was subsequently lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Despite the arrest, authorities continued to appeal to the public for more information, urging anyone who was present at the Mingle Lounge before or during the shooting to come forward and speak with detectives.
