In the early morning hours of October 6, 2020, a tragedy unfolded inside a hotel room in downtown Portland, Oregon, that would cut short the life of Shawn Fujioka, a 23-year-old Black male from southwest Washington. Just before 1 a.m., Portland Police Bureau officers from the Central Precinct were dispatched to a hotel located in the 1400 block of Southwest Naito Parkway following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Fujioka inside a room at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront Hotel, suffering from a serious injury consistent with a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel quickly transported Fujioka to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office later conducted an autopsy and determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, officially ruling the manner of death as a homicide. In the immediate aftermath, police had not released any information about a potential suspect and began an investigation into the city's 40th homicide of the year.
Homicide detectives with the Portland Police Bureau quickly began their investigation. Within two days, their work led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. On October 8, 2020, an arrest warrant was obtained for 22-year-old Abdikadir Mohamed Osman for his alleged connection to Fujioka's death. The search for Osman then commenced, involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
A week later, on October 15, 2020, a coordinated effort between the Portland Police Bureau's Detective Division, the Special Emergency Reaction Team and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Taskforce led to the location and arrest of Osman. He was taken into custody in the 3600 block of Southeast 28th Avenue. Following the arrest, detectives, with assistance from SERT and the Crisis Negotiation Team, served a related search warrant at a residence in the 8400 block of Southeast 77th Avenue. Osman was subsequently lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center. A grand jury later indicted him on charges of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm, Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm, Menacing, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
