His brother, Sean Tahtinen, had last spoken to him on January 3rd and was scheduled to take him to the airport on January 5th. When Dean couldn't be reached, Sean initially thought he might have taken a cab.
However, on January 6th, Dean's supervisor from Wells Fargo Bank contacted Sean, reporting that Dean had uncharacteristically missed work and had not arrived in Arizona. This prompted Sean to go to his brother's apartment in the 106th block of Northeast Wygant in Portland, Oregon, to check on him.
Upon entering the apartment at approximately 7 p.m., Sean made a tragic discovery; he found his brother deceased inside. He immediately left and alerted the police. An autopsy would later confirm that Dean Tahtinen had died as a result of homicidal violence, although the specific details of his injuries were not publicly disclosed by investigators.
Detectives began to piece together Dean's last known movements. They determined that he was last seen alive on the evening of January 4, 1997, at a downtown Portland bar he was known to frequent, CC Slaughters.
