In the late evening of August 28, 2022, a Sunday, the life of 54-year-old Stephenic Hall, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Portland, Oregon. Officers from the East Precinct were dispatched to the 600 block of Southeast 148th Avenue in the Centennial Neighborhood at 9:32 p.m. following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man who had been shot.
Medical personnel who also responded to the scene confirmed that the man, later identified as Stephenic Hall, was deceased.
The Portland Police Homicide Unit immediately began an investigation into the shooting. Two days later, on August 30, 2022, the authorities publicly identified the victim as Stephenic Hall. The Medical Examiner's Office determined that the cause of his death was a gunshot wound and officially ruled it a homicide. At that time, Hall's family was notified of his death and provided a photograph of him for public release, while also requesting privacy during their time of grief. His death was one of three homicides that occurred in a particularly violent weekend in Portland, which also saw seven other shootings.
Born in Meadville, Mississippi, on August 25, 1968, Stephenic Cornell Hall was known by loved ones as "Cornell." He had a larger-than-life presence and a smile that could light up any room. He had moved to Portland as an adult to work and save money for his family, who joined him there in 1997. Over the years, he worked in various professions, including at the union hall, shipyards, and in construction. He was a father to seven children and a grandfather to five. Despite the ongoing investigation by the Portland Police Bureau, no information regarding any suspects or arrests in connection with the murder of Stephenic Hall has been made public.
