On June 11, 1907, Patrolman James J. Francisco, a 45-year-old officer from Bluefield, West Virginia, lost his life in the line of duty. The incident occurred when Francisco and another officer, identified as Officer Thomas Hunt, were called to the city jail to address a disturbance created by a man whose wife had been arrested earlier that evening.
