In the early morning hours of July 30, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in the community of Bluewell, West Virginia, that cut short the life of 27-year-old Arrien Porterfield, a Black male from Princeton. The incident, which the Mercer County Sheriff's Department is investigating as a homicide, took place at Lynn's Drive-in around 3 a.m. Porterfield was found in the parking lot with a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to his mother, Brenda Rucker, her son was an
innocent bystander who lost his life while trying to be a good Samaritan. She recounted that Porterfield had accepted a ride home with friends when they encountered a volatile situation. A man was reportedly beating a young girl, and when Porterfield stepped in to protect her, he was shot. His mother described him as a kind-hearted and helpful person, a loving father to his young daughter, and someone whose smile could light up a room.
In the wake of her son's death, Brenda Rucker has voiced her frustration and anguish over the pace of the investigation. She has stated that the name of the alleged shooter was mentioned in a 911 call from the scene and that she believes the identity of the person responsible is known within the community. Despite this, as of early September 2023, no arrests had been made in connection with Arrien Porterfield's death, and no suspects had been publicly identified by law enforcement officials.
The Mercer County Sheriff's Department has appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
