In the early morning hours of November 5, 2020, a tragedy unfolded on the West Side of Charleston, West Virginia, that claimed the life of Charles Raymond Barnes, Jr., a 40-year-old White / Caucasian man. Just after midnight, police were dispatched to the intersection of Grant and Russell streets. There, they discovered Barnes lying partially in the street, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Investigators determined that Barnes had been walking west on Grant
Street when he was approached from behind by his assailant. The suspect fired a single shot, striking Barnes in the back of the head, and then fled the scene on foot, heading south on Russell Street. Eyewitness accounts provided a description of the suspect as an individual wearing a black hoodie, jeans, and black tennis shoes.
In the wake of the shooting, the Charleston Police Department launched an investigation into Barnes's death. They appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the person responsible. Despite their efforts and having a description of the suspect, no arrests have been made in the case, and the shooter remains at large.
