In the early morning hours of September 13, 2013, the small community of Rockwell City, Iowa, was irrevocably changed by an act of violence that claimed the life of one of its own. Jamie Daniel Buenting, a 37-year-old Caucasian male and a dedicated police officer, was shot and killed during a tense standoff. The incident began hours earlier when officers responded to a report that a man wanted on a felony warrant for domestic assault was at a residence on Pleasant Street.
The suspect,
identified as Corey Allen Trott, barricaded himself inside the home, refusing to surrender to the authorities who had gathered outside. For approximately four hours, law enforcement officers worked to bring a peaceful resolution to the escalating situation. The quiet neighborhood was shattered at around 1:40 a.m. when a single shot was fired from within the house. That bullet struck Officer Buenting, inflicting a fatal wound. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital in nearby Lake City.
Even after the tragic shooting, the standoff continued for several more hours. An Iowa State Patrol tactical team was called to the scene, and Trott eventually surrendered to authorities at approximately 5:30 a.m. In the aftermath of the incident, the small Rockwell City Police Department, which consisted of only four officers, mourned the loss of a colleague who had served with them for eight of his twelve years in law enforcement. He was remembered as a kind and dedicated officer, a husband, and a father to two young children.
Corey Trott, who was 32 at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. In September 2014, he was found guilty and subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Officer Jamie Buenting. Trott had a prior criminal history that included charges of harassment and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. His actions that September morning left a lasting scar on the community and a void in the family of the officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
