On a summer evening in Des Moines, Iowa, what should have been a celebratory time turned into a tragedy. James Patton, a 41-year-old Black or African American man, was on his way to his mother's 68th birthday party on July 21, 2016. At approximately 6:00 p.m., in the parking lot behind a convenience store in the 1400 block of East Ovid Avenue, Patton was shot multiple times. Despite the arrival of police and rescue personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
