On a Thursday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa, the life of 23-year-old Rashid Mohamed Ibrahim, a Black/African American male, was cut short by gun violence. The shooting, which occurred on October 10, 2019, marked the city's 13th homicide of the year. The Des Moines Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
The investigation led by detectives resulted in the identification and subsequent arrest of multiple suspects in
connection with Ibrahim's murder. Initially, two 18-year-olds, Gregory Hampton and Adam Ishmael, were taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. The diligent work of law enforcement continued, leading to the apprehension of two more teenagers, 16-year-old Jackson Callaway and 17-year-old Rodney Brown Jr., who also faced the same serious charge. The search for Callaway was described as unusual, as he was ultimately found and arrested at his high school after attempting to flee from a school resource officer.
Authorities believe the motive behind the fatal shooting was a narcotics transaction that had gone awry. The investigation suggested that what began as a drug deal escalated into the violent encounter that ended Ibrahim's life. Police also indicated that the investigation remained ongoing even after the four arrests, suggesting the possibility of others being involved.
