In the late afternoon of March 7, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet outside East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, just as the school day was coming to a close. In the chaos that ensued, a 15-year-old Hispanic male named Jose David López Pérez was fatally wounded. He was not a student at the high school, but he became the sole fatality in an incident that also left two female students critically injured.
Police would later describe the shooting as a targeted attack rooted in an ongoing conflict between rival Hispanic gangs.
The investigation into the brazen daylight shooting moved swiftly. Investigators determined that the shots were fired from at least three different vehicles, and they recovered numerous shell casings from the scene. Within hours, the Des Moines Police Department, with assistance from federal agencies, began making arrests. The initial wave of arrests brought in six male teenagers, with ages ranging from 14 to 17. These individuals were promptly charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
As the investigation deepened, the number of individuals facing charges grew. Ultimately, a total of ten teenagers were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting that claimed the life of Jose David López Pérez. The suspects identified were Octavio Lopez, 17, Nyang Chamdual, 14, Manuel Buezo, 16, Romero Perdomo, 16, Alex Perdomo, 15, and Henry Valladares-Amaya, 17. Later, four more teens were charged: Gumaro Marquez-Jacobo, 18, Kevin Isidro Martinez, 16, Braulio Hernandez-Salas, 17, and Daniel Hernandez, 17.
The legal process that followed saw a series of plea deals and sentencings. Several of the teens pleaded guilty to various charges, including second-degree murder, willful injury, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. The sentences handed down varied, with some of the young men receiving lengthy prison terms. For example, Kevin Martinez, who was a driver in one of the vehicles, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The court proceedings revealed a grim picture of gang-related violence that had tragically cut short the life of a teenager.
