In the late afternoon of March 7, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet outside East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, just as the school day was coming to a close. In the chaos that ensued, a 15-year-old Hispanic male named Jose David López Pérez was fatally wounded. He was not a student at the high school, but he became the sole fatality in an incident that also left two female students critically injured.
