In the summer of 2014, a quiet neighborhood in Des Moines, Iowa, was shaken by the tragic death of Rupert Anderson, a 97-year-old White male. Known to his friends and family as "Andy," he passed away on July 2, 2014, a victim of a violent home invasion. The incident not only claimed his life but also left his wife of 76 years, Harriet, hospitalized with injuries.
The attack occurred in the couple's east side home, where they had operated a boarding kennel for many years.
In the midst of the assault, Harriet Anderson was able to call 911 and provide a description of their attacker. This crucial information led police to a suspect a short time later.
Authorities arrested 19-year-old Ngor Makuey in connection with the brutal crime. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. The investigation revealed that Anderson was tragically beaten to death with a metal spatula.
In December 2015, a judge found Ngor Makuey guilty of murder, as well as assault with intent to commit serious injury and robbery. In January of the following year, he was sentenced to life in prison for the senseless killing of Rupert Anderson, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that had deeply affected the Des Moines community.
