On June 17, 2017, 26-year-old Darnell Lee was fatally shot during an after-hours gathering in the 1800 block of Easton Boulevard in Des Moines, Iowa. The incident, which also claimed the life of 30-year-old Jason A. Smith, occurred around 3 a.m. Police responded to reports of a shooting and encountered a hostile crowd, with witnesses initially reluctant to cooperate. Lee was pronounced dead at the scene, while Smith succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
