In the early hours of a summer morning in Des Moines, Iowa, the life of 26-year-old Darnell Lee, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 17, 2017, violence erupted at a gathering on the city's east side, resulting in a double homicide that also claimed the life of 30-year-old Jason Smith. The incident, which marked the 17th and 18th homicides in Des Moines that year, stemmed from a fight that broke out at a party.
