On July 20, 2021, what should have been a time for family and creating joyful memories turned into a day of profound loss and unanswered questions. The teenager, known to her loved ones as "Ty," was discovered in a vehicle that had crashed at the Hawthorne Hill Apartments.
It was a scene that would soon reveal a violent end to a young life; an investigation determined she had sustained at least one gunshot wound.
The initial discovery of the crashed vehicle gave way to a homicide investigation as the details of Tyliyah's death came into focus. The vehicle itself bore the marks of the violence that had occurred, with significant damage reported. As the Cedar Rapids police delved into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the community mourned the loss of a vibrant young woman who was remembered for being funny, pretty, and always smiling and cracking jokes. She was also a talented basketball player with her entire future ahead of her.
Months after the tragic event, the investigation led to a significant development. In February 2022, authorities announced the arrest of 19-year-old Marshawn Rome Jackson of Cedar Rapids. He was charged with first-degree murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and being a person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons in connection with Tyliyah's death. The legal proceedings against Jackson commenced, though the path to justice would prove to be a lengthy one, with his trial being reset. Later, a second individual was also arrested in connection with the shooting, though further details about this suspect were not as widely publicized. The case remains a painful reminder of a young life taken too soon, as the legal system continues its work to bring closure to a grieving family and community.
