On September 13, 2002, a domestic dispute in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, ended in a tragic murder-suicide. Michelle Richards, a 34-year-old female, was shot and killed by her estranged husband, 28-year-old Duane Richards. The events unfolded when Michelle, seeking to retrieve personal items from the home she had shared with her husband, arrived at the residence accompanied by her sister and a police officer for a standby.
Upon their arrival at the Summit View Mobile Home Park, Duane Richards
refused to allow his estranged wife entry into the home. Determined to collect her belongings, Michelle broke a window to gain access to the interior of the residence. Shortly after she went inside, the officer and her sister, who were waiting outside, heard the sound of three gunshots.
Responding to the officer's call for backup, the Cedar Rapids Police Department's special response team secured the area. Approximately two hours later, they made entry into the home. Inside, they discovered the bodies of both Michelle and Duane Richards. The investigation concluded that Duane had shot and killed Michelle before turning the gun on himself. A search of the home uncovered a dozen firearms, including assault rifles.
