In the winter of 2010, the life of Tawny Jo "Bones" Tomberlin, a 43-year-old Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in her Cedar Rapids, Iowa, home. On the evening of Friday, January 22nd, she was fatally wounded by gunshots. Her brother, Duane "Dewey" Tomberlin, was also shot during the incident but his injuries were not life-threatening. A second man at the residence also sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly centered on Tawny's 42-year-old
ex-boyfriend, Christopher Allen Vogt. Witnesses reported seeing Vogt leave the scene of the shooting in his red pickup truck. Neighbors indicated that Tawny had recently ended her relationship with Vogt and had moved in with her brother. Authorities launched a search for Vogt, using his cell phone signal to track his vehicle.
Several hours after the shooting, in the early morning hours of the following day, law enforcement located Vogt's truck in a farm field near Mount Vernon. Inside the vehicle, they discovered Christopher Allen Vogt deceased from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case was ultimately classified by authorities as a murder-suicide.
