On a summer morning in a quiet Cedar Rapids, Iowa neighborhood, the tranquility was shattered by a tragic event. Inside their family home on Oak Leaf Court NE, 19-year-old Caucasian female Sabrina Hana Jackson, her father Jan Perry Jackson, 61, and her mother Melissa Ferne Jackson, 68, were found dead from gunshot wounds on June 15, 2021. The grim discovery was made after a 911 call was placed from the residence.
The initial report to authorities came from Sabrina's older brother,
20-year-old Alexander Ken Jackson. He claimed that a masked intruder had broken into their home, shot him in the foot, and attacked his family. When first responders arrived, they found Sabrina and her parents deceased in different rooms of the house. Alexander was transported to a local hospital for the wound to his foot.
However, investigators quickly began to question Alexander's account. There were no signs of forced entry at the family's home, which they had lived in for a decade. Suspicion mounted, and shortly after being treated and released from the hospital, Alexander Jackson was arrested. He was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents and his younger sister.
The prosecution's case revealed a motive for the horrific crime. It was reported that Alexander's father had recently told him he needed to get a job or move out of the family home. Alexander, a student at the University of Iowa, denied killing his family. Despite his claims of an intruder, he was convicted of all three counts of first-degree murder in January 2023.
