In the late autumn of 2017, the life of a 33-year-old Caucasian woman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was tragically cut short. Heidi Stephens, a mother of three, was fatally shot on November 20, 2017. The incident stemmed from a dispute over a purse that had been stolen from her. During the confrontation, she was shot, sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Her friend, Andrew Shank, was also targeted by the gunman but fortunately survived the attack.
Following the shooting, Stephens was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital. Despite medical efforts, she was declared brain dead. Her family made the decision to keep her on life support to facilitate the donation of her organs. Heidi Stephens passed away on November 22, 2017. Remembered as a caring and giving person who loved the outdoors, her death was a profound loss to her family and the community.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 24-year-old Zackary Ildefonso Ortiz. He was taken into custody without incident and faced multiple charges, including murder. In May 2019, Ildefonso Ortiz pleaded guilty to the crimes, admitting to intentionally shooting Stephens and attempting to harm her friend. Consequently, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in the violent events that led to the death of Heidi Stephens.
