In the quiet, suburban neighborhood of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the morning of June 15, 2021, was shattered by a tragic event that claimed the life of 68-year-old Melissa Ferne Jackson, a White/Caucasian female, along with two other family members. The gruesome discovery was made after a distressing 911 call led police to their home on Oak Leaf Court NE.
First responders arrived at the scene to find a grim tableau.
Inside the residence, three individuals were found deceased, each in different rooms, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Melissa Ferne Jackson, her 61-year-old husband Jan Perry Jackson, and their 19-year-old daughter, Sabrina Hana Jackson. The family had lived in the house for a decade, making the violent intrusion into their lives all the more shocking to the community.
The initial report to the authorities came from a fourth family member present in the house, 20-year-old Alexander Ken Jackson, the son of Melissa and Jan. He claimed that a masked intruder had broken into their home, shot him in the foot, and also shot his father. Alexander was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injury. However, as investigators delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, his story began to unravel.
Detectives found no signs of forced entry into the home, which cast doubt on the home invasion narrative. Further investigation throughout the day led to a significant shift in the focus of the inquiry. By that evening, the sole survivor of the incident, Alexander Ken Jackson, was arrested in connection with the killings. He was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors alleged that the motive behind the horrific act was an ultimatum given to him by his father to either get a job or move out of the family home. Following his arrest, Alexander was booked into the Linn County Correctional Center. In January 2023, a jury found him guilty of murdering his parents and his sister.
