On May 11, 2016, Ira A. Cotton, a 56-year-old former Cook County correctional officer, was shot and killed during an attempted robbery on Chicago's South Side. Cotton was standing on the front porch of a friend's house in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood when the incident occurred.
