Janet Colleen Goode, a 57-year-old White female, was fatally shot on July 10, 2014, in the small town of Parowan, Utah. On that day, police responded to a report of shots fired at approximately 12:30 p.m. and discovered her body lying in the driveway of a residence at 272 S. 800 West. She had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of her stepfather, 83-year-old Nathan C. Zimmerman.
According to court documents, Zimmerman confessed to the killing. He told investigators that as Janet began walking toward his house, he picked up a preloaded shotgun, took the safety off, and intentionally shot her. He expressed no remorse for his actions, stating that his intention was solely to kill his stepdaughter.
The day of the shooting held a significant personal turmoil, as it was the same day that Zimmerman's wife, Janet's mother, had filed for divorce. While an official motive was not extensively detailed in initial reports, authorities were investigating the divorce as a potential factor. Later, it was stated that Zimmerman claimed he shot his stepdaughter over financial disputes, alleging that they were trying to get his money.
Nathan C. Zimmerman was charged with first-degree murder. He subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge. In November 2014, a judge sentenced him to serve 15 years to life in prison for the murder of his stepdaughter, Janet Colleen Goode.
