Linda Kay Jonides, a 57-year-old White female, died on December 10, 2021, in Sandy, Utah, the victim of a tragic domestic violence incident. On that Friday evening, her husband, William Matthew Jonides, then 57, called 911 to report that he had just shot his wife. When Sandy City Police officers arrived at their home on Montana Drive, they found William on the front porch, and he surrendered to them.
Inside the residence, officers discovered Linda's body in an upstairs bedroom with
obvious signs of trauma. Sandy Fire personnel confirmed that she was deceased at the scene. According to charging documents, the couple had been in a heated argument. William told police that he became angry when Linda started screaming, so he picked up a shotgun from the bed and shot her while she was on the floor. An autopsy later determined that Linda was shot at close range and was trying to turn away to protect herself when the fatal shot was fired.
The investigation revealed that Linda's death was the culmination of an abusive relationship. William Jonides had reportedly isolated his wife from her friends and family. In his interview with police, he made references to prior domestic violence incidents. In one instance in June of the same year, he had become angry with his wife and waved a revolver around the room.
Following the incident, William Matthew Jonides was taken into custody and later charged with murder, a first-degree felony. He told investigators that he killed his wife "in a fit of rage." He was booked into jail and is being held without bail. Linda was remembered as a kind soul and a tireless caretaker for her husband during his many years of mental illness. She had worked as a Chief Insurance Underwriter and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
