In the summer of 2020, a young Hispanic/Latino woman's life was tragically cut short in Sandy, Utah. On the evening of July 22, 18-year-old Aliani Mejia-Marin was at the Sandy Mobile Home Park located at 223-201 W. Eastgate Drive. A confrontation between two groups erupted, and the dispute quickly escalated to gunfire. Mejia-Marin was struck by a bullet and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, but she later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting
revealed a devastating mistake. The person who fired the weapon, a 14-year-old boy, had allegedly been targeting a rival gang member. In a cruel twist of fate, the bullet missed its intended target and instead struck Aliani Mejia-Marin, who was not involved in the conflict. At the time of the incident, she was reportedly with her husband inside a parked SUV when an altercation occurred with three minors.
Following the shooting, the Sandy Police Department launched an immediate investigation. By that same evening, they had taken a 14-year-old male suspect into custody. Due to his status as a minor, his name has not been publicly released. He was subsequently booked into the Juvenile Detention Center. Authorities have stated that there are no other outstanding suspects in connection with the shooting. The teenage suspect is now facing four felony charges, including one count of murder, for his role in the death of Aliani Mejia-Marin.
