Rebecca Siwale, a 47-year-old Black woman, was tragically killed on June 8, 2024, in her Sandy, Utah home. The evening of her death, an argument between Rebecca and her 57-year-old husband, Stanley Siwale, led to him instructing their three children, aged between 11 and 17, to leave the house. Shortly after the children were outside, they heard multiple "explosion type sounds."
Police were called to the residence near 2100 East and 9700 South at approximately 9:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the children and entered the home to check on the couple. Inside, they discovered the bodies of both Rebecca and Stanley Siwale. Investigators determined that Rebecca had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while Stanley had a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case was subsequently ruled a murder-suicide, with Stanley Siwale identified as the person who shot and killed his wife before taking his own life. Sandy police confirmed that there had been no prior reports of domestic violence at the couple's home.
Originally from Zambia, Rebecca Siwale was a highly accomplished and respected figure in the mining industry. She served as the vice president and head of digital services at FLSmidth Inc. and was recognized as one of the "100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining" by Women In Mining – UK. Those who knew her remembered her as a trailblazer who was also down-to-earth, funny, and sweet. In a statement released through the Organisation of Zambians Abroad, her children expressed their desire for their parents to be remembered for the rich lives they led rather than the tragic circumstances of their deaths.
