In the early morning hours of May 21, 2016, a violent home invasion in Salt Lake City, UT, claimed the life of Darrin Jackson, a 46-year-old White/Caucasian male. The incident unfolded at approximately 2:30 a.m. at a residence located at 1821 E. Hidden Meadows Drive. Jackson's son, Jonathan, answered a knock at the door, and several individuals forced their way inside.
Hearing the commotion, Darrin Jackson emerged from a bedroom wielding a pool stick to defend his son.
In the ensuing confrontation, one of the intruders, armed with a firearm, shot Darrin. He sustained fatal injuries to his head and chest. Jonathan Jackson was also shot during the home invasion, suffering an injury to his hand. The assailants fled the scene after the shooting.
The investigation into the homicide led police to identify three suspects: Damian "Kuddy" Antonio Garcia, 19, Joshua "Panda" Nguyen, 21, and Keison "Kedders" Kuykendall, 18. Authorities stated that the home invasion was gang-related and stemmed from a dispute over recent thefts. All three suspects were subsequently arrested and faced charges in connection with Darrin Jackson's death.
In the resolution of the legal proceedings, Damian Garcia, the gunman, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, a second-degree felony, as part of a plea agreement. He was sentenced to a term of one to 15 years in prison. Joshua Nguyen and Keison Kuykendall both pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, a second-degree felony. The murder charges originally filed against them were dismissed, and they were each sentenced to 36 months of probation.
