On a Tuesday evening, October 10, 1989, the life of Donovan Silence Davis, a 22-year-old Black male also known as Marlon S. Brown, was tragically cut short in Norwalk, Connecticut. Patrolling officers discovered him lying face down in a pool of blood in the middle of Grove Street in South Norwalk at approximately 8:08 p.m. Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced him deceased.
A subsequent autopsy would reveal that he had been fatally shot in the back of the neck with a shotgun.
Witnesses to the event painted a chaotic and frightening picture of Davis's final moments. They reported hearing a disturbance just before the shooting. A black four-door sedan, thought to be an Oldsmobile or Buick, carrying three to four men, was seen stopping near 7 Grove St. to confront Davis. According to one account, a Black male dressed entirely in black stepped out of the vehicle and demanded of Davis, "tell me who it was." When Davis replied that he did not know, he was shot. However, another witness provided a conflicting description of the assailant, identifying the shooter as a Hispanic male in his early 20s who was wearing jeans and a jean jacket.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators followed up on various leads. Information surfaced suggesting that a Black male named Eric may have been the one who shot Davis, possibly over a monetary dispute. This theory also suggested that Eric might have acted on behalf of another man, Cleveland Thompson, who was incarcerated at the time of the murder.
Despite the witness accounts and the leads that were generated, a positive identification of the suspects was never made. The case grew cold over the years, leaving the murder of Donovan Davis unsolved. The Norwalk Police Department has revisited the case periodically, appealing to the public for any new information that might finally lead to an arrest and bring closure to the decades-old mystery. As of today, no arrests have ever been made in connection with his death.
