In the early morning hours of February 4, 2023, what initially appeared to be a single-car crash on Route 7 in Norwalk, Connecticut, soon revealed a much darker story. Inside the vehicle was 35-year-old John Gavilanes, a Black/African American male from Norwalk, who was found unresponsive in the driver's seat and pronounced dead at the scene. First responders were called to the northbound side of the highway near Exit 2 around 3:20 a.m. for a reported accident.
However, the evidence present at the scene quickly indicated that this was no ordinary traffic incident.
State police investigators determined that Gavilanes had not died from injuries sustained in a crash. Instead, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed that he had suffered fatal gunshot wounds to his head and torso. The investigation was swiftly reclassified as a homicide. Authorities noted that the incident appeared to be isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public. John Gavilanes was remembered by his family as a father of two young children who was full of life and cherished time with his family. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with his burial expenses.
The investigation into the death of John Gavilanes led to the arrests of two individuals. Liliana Mejia and her boyfriend, Christopher Suarez, were both charged with murder in connection with Gavilanes' death. Suarez also faced a charge of tampering with evidence. The investigation involved a detailed review of surveillance footage, cell phone records, and social media activity, which suggested that Mejia and Suarez had intentionally planned and caused Gavilanes' death. Evidence indicated that Mejia had been in communication with Gavilanes just prior to the shooting.
