On the evening of February 3, 2012, a sense of unease settled over a paved river walkway alongside the then-new AvalonBay Community apartment complex on Belden Avenue in Norwalk, Connecticut. It was there that the life of 20-year-old Joseph Bate, a White male also known as Joseph Bateman and nicknamed "Jabs," was cut short.
