On a summer night in Stratford, Connecticut, the life of 20-year-old Noel Gonzalez was tragically cut short. On July 30, 2011, Gonzalez was on the front porch of his home on Barnum Avenue when he was fatally shot. The Hispanic male died from a single gunshot wound to the head. At the time of the incident, he was with friends, and there were also children present on the porch.
The investigation into Gonzalez's death, which was the first homicide in Stratford that year, quickly led to
suspects. Authorities obtained surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store that showed six young men in three cars leaving the parking lot and heading toward Gonzalez's residence shortly before the shooting. The investigation suggested an altercation may have preceded the fatal shot. Witnesses reported that Gonzalez had yelled at the passing cars, and there was a possibility that he may have fired shots into the air or at the vehicles. In response, at least four shots were fired from one of the cars towards Gonzalez.
The first arrest came when 24-year-old Jose Rivera of Bridgeport surrendered to the police. Initially, Rivera allegedly confessed to being the shooter, claiming he only intended to scare Gonzalez. Police found the murder weapon at Rivera's home. However, the case took a turn when Rivera recanted his confession, claiming he was covering for the actual shooter, 23-year-old Wilfredo Martinez, because Martinez had a child. Subsequently, Martinez, also from the area, was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and other related offenses.
Ultimately, Wilfredo Martinez pleaded guilty to reduced charges of second-degree manslaughter and carrying a pistol without a permit. The prosecution explained the decision to reduce the charges by stating that Martinez's actions were seen as reckless rather than intentional. Martinez was sentenced to a 10-year prison term. This outcome was met with anguish by Noel Gonzalez's family, who voiced their belief that the sentence did not bring justice for their loss. Another man, Jose Rivera, was also arrested in connection with the killing.
