Walter Procyk, a 40-year-old male, was the well-liked owner of Honeyspot News and Variety in Stratford, Connecticut. Known for his kindness and good humor, he had just finished closing his shop for the night at approximately 10:45 p.m.
As he walked through the parking lot toward his car, an unknown assailant approached him from behind and fired a gun, striking him in the back.
People nearby rushed to his aid and found him lying wounded in the parking lot. Before losing consciousness, Procyk was able to provide some details about what had happened. He was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries during surgery the following day, July 24, 1999. The initial belief by authorities was that the motive for the attack was an attempted robbery. However, this theory was complicated by the fact that the store had not been robbed and Procyk's wallet was still on his person when he was taken to the hospital, leaving the true motive unclear and the community in shock.
