On a tragic day in April of 2018, the life of Anthony Charles Fusco, a 56-year-old White male from Gaylordsville, Connecticut, was violently cut short. A retired corrections officer, he was known as a devoted family man and a beloved member of his community. His unexpected death on April 12, 2018, was not an isolated incident but the culmination of a deeply disturbing series of events that spanned multiple states.
Anthony Fusco and his wife had adopted a daughter, Katie Pladl, at a young
age and raised her in what friends and neighbors described as a normal, loving home. When Katie turned 18, she sought out her biological parents and reconnected with them. This reunion, however, took a dark and tragic turn. Katie entered into an incestuous relationship with her biological father, Steven Walter Pladl, and they had a son together.
The disturbing relationship eventually led to criminal charges of incest against both Steven and Katie Pladl. Not long after, on that fateful April day, Steven Pladl drove from North Carolina to Connecticut, where he ambushed Anthony Fusco and Katie. As Anthony and Katie sat in their pickup truck at an intersection in New Milford, Steven Pladl opened fire, killing them both. An eyewitness reported seeing Pladl pull up beside their truck and unload a semi-automatic rifle into the vehicle. The medical examiner later confirmed that both Anthony Fusco and Katie Pladl died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Following the murders, Steven Pladl fled the scene and was later found dead in his vehicle in Dover, New York, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation further revealed a horrifying prelude to the double murder in Connecticut. Before traveling to confront Anthony and Katie, Steven Pladl had murdered his and Katie's seven-month-old infant son in North Carolina. The tragic events left a trail of devastation, with three lives, including that of a beloved father and community member, brought to a violent and senseless end.
