In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in New Haven, Connecticut, the life of 29-year-old Leron Vaughn, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On September 5, 2023, at approximately 1:35 a.m., the city's ShotSpotter system detected the sound of five gunshots in the vicinity of the 400 block of Winthrop Avenue. Responding to the alert and a subsequent flurry of 911 calls, police officers arrived at the scene to a grim discovery.
Behind a white Infiniti, they found Leron Vaughn suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two unidentified individuals fleeing the area on foot, heading northbound on Winthrop Avenue. A K9 unit was brought in to track the suspects, but the search did not yield any significant leads. Detectives have been canvassing the neighborhood, seeking footage from nearby businesses that might have captured the incident or the moments leading up to it. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the police have not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation remains active as authorities appeal to the public for any information that could help bring those responsible to justice.
Leron was remembered by his family and friends as a loving and loyal individual with a good heart. His mother, Phyllis Vaughn, described him as a good person who loved children and his family dearly. This was not the first time tragedy had struck the Vaughn family; in June 2000, Leron's sister, Lakeia Vaughn, was also killed by gun violence in the same neighborhood. Leron, a 2013 graduate of James Hill House High School, had been working in transportation and for UPS. His death marked the 17th homicide in New Haven in 2023, leaving his family and the community in a state of shock and mourning.
