In the early morning hours of August 17, 2025, the downtown streets of New Haven, Connecticut, were filled with the usual weekend sounds of a city winding down. For 18-year-old Dillon Cornelius, a Black/African American male from West Haven, this night would be his last. At approximately 2:52 a.m., the relative peace on College Street, between Crown and Chapel Streets, was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
New Haven police officers, who were on patrol near the downtown bars, heard the shots and rushed towards the chaos. They found Cornelius lying facedown in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel provided aid at the scene and in the ambulance, but he was pronounced dead a short time later at Yale New Haven Hospital.
The scene of the shooting stretched for several blocks, with numerous shell casings littering the pavement. The violence of the encounter was evident on the storefronts and parked cars that were scarred by stray bullets. Detectives began to piece together the events of that morning by reviewing surveillance footage from the area. The video revealed a chaotic and violent exchange of gunfire. According to police and court records, the footage showed Cornelius drawing a handgun from his waistband and firing at another man, referred to as "Suspect #1," after this individual had fallen. "Suspect #1" returned fire, and at that moment, two other gunmen who were at the corner of Chapel and College streets also began shooting in their direction, escalating the gunfight.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, another man, a 23-year-old from Hamden, arrived at Yale New Haven Hospital with a graze wound about twenty minutes after Cornelius was brought in. He informed the police that he had been in the downtown area when the shooting occurred. However, investigators have not found any evidence to connect his injury to the shooting that resulted in Cornelius's death.
The investigation into the intricate and violent incident led to several arrests. Surveillance footage showed 19-year-old Wade F. Johnson Jr. approaching Cornelius as he lay on the ground after the shooting. Johnson was seen manipulating items near Cornelius's waistband before he limped away from the scene. Police believe that Johnson removed the firearm that Cornelius had been using, as no weapon was found on or near his body. Johnson was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including evidence tampering, carrying a pistol without a permit, and criminal possession of a firearm. In connection with the ongoing investigation into local group rivalries, which police believe were at the heart of the violence, another man, 25-year-old Kareem Dixon, was taken into custody. Dixon was arrested as a parole absconder, and a Glock pistol with extended magazines was seized from him. Investigators believe this weapon may match the shell casings found at the scene of Cornelius's death. Police have indicated that both Cornelius and Dixon have ties to a group known as "Stand on Business" or SOB. Although arrests have been made, the investigation is not closed. Authorities have announced that they have secured an arrest warrant for the individual they believe to be the primary shooter who fired at Dillon Cornelius. This suspect, however, has not yet been publicly identified or apprehended.
