On the evening of June 15, 2022, Anthony Oden, a 49-year-old Black / African American male, became the fifth homicide victim of the year in New Haven, Connecticut. The day was marked by violence, with three other individuals wounded in separate shootings, but his injuries would prove to be the only fatal ones.
Police were called to the area of Starr Street, between Winchester Avenue and Newhall Street, at approximately 6:51 p.m. following a report of a shooting.
Upon arrival, they discovered Oden suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported him to Yale New Haven Hospital, but the medical staff was unable to save his life, and he succumbed to his injuries.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 5, 1972, Oden had moved to New Haven as a youth. He was known by loved ones for his kindness, humor, and willingness to help others. His death left a void in the lives of his family and the many friends he had made throughout his life in the city.
In the wake of the shooting, detectives from the Major Crimes Unit were assigned to lead the investigation. The Bureau of Identification processed the scene on Starr Street and collected ballistic evidence. Authorities have appealed to the public for assistance, asking any witnesses with information to come forward. To date, no arrests have been announced, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the killing of Anthony Oden. The case remains under investigation.
