On November 25, 2021, at approximately 1:17 a.m., New Haven police responded to 911 calls reporting a shooting on Sherman Avenue, between Elm Street and Whalley Avenue. Upon arrival, a concerned citizen directed officers to 45-year-old Lemuel "Rif" Erik Hamilton, who had sustained gunshot wounds. Hamilton was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries.
