In the crisp autumn afternoon of November 22, 2024, the life of 16-year-old Uzziah Shell, a Black male from New Haven, Connecticut, was tragically cut short. At approximately 2:35 p.m., gunfire erupted near the intersection of Goffe and Hudson Streets, a time when the neighborhood is usually bustling with the energy of the end of a school day. Uzziah, a student at Riverside Education Academy, was found suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. In a terrifying turn of events, a stray bullet from the shooting struck a passing school bus carrying children from the Celentano Biotech, Health and Medical Magnet School. The bus driver's quick actions in driving several blocks away from the scene ensured that none of the children on board were physically harmed.
The investigation into Uzziah's death commenced immediately, with New Haven police processing the scene and gathering evidence. Early in the investigation, authorities indicated that the shooting appeared to be targeted, based on video evidence they had obtained. In the immediate aftermath, a 16-year-old was detained nearby in possession of a "ghost gun" with an extended magazine; however, he was later cleared of any involvement in Uzziah's homicide. Police also located a suspect vehicle in Bridgeport that was being processed for DNA and other evidence. As of late December 2024, no arrests had been made directly in connection with Uzziah Shell's murder, and the investigation remains ongoing. The One In Five Foundation for Kids has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. The shooting is believed to be connected to the subsequent shooting death of Uzziah's friend, 17-year-old Daley Jackson, which has led to an arrest in that case.
The loss of Uzziah has been deeply felt by his family and the New Haven community. He was remembered by his mother, Latasha Shell, and his sister, Aniqua Booker, as a fashion-loving and fun-loving teenager who "lifted people's spirits." He had aspirations of following in his late father's footsteps to become an HVAC specialist or launching his own clothing line. His funeral was held on December 7, 2024, where friends, family, and city leaders gathered to honor his memory. Described as a "bright and promising young man known for his kindness and enthusiasm," his death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him. The community continues to mourn and hope for justice for Uzziah.
