Lequan Young, a 24-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2015, in a West Haven, Connecticut neighborhood. The incident took place near the intersection of Jaffrey and Dalton streets, where police were dispatched following reports of gunshots at approximately 9:45 p.m.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered several shell casings littering the street, but the victim was not at the scene.
Concurrently, Yale New Haven Hospital notified police that a man, later identified as Lequan Young of New Haven, had been brought to the emergency room with a single gunshot wound to the chest. Young ultimately succumbed to his injury at the hospital.
Investigators learned that another individual had transported Young to the hospital, and this person was interviewed by the police. The shooting was believed to have occurred on Dalton Street, between Jaffrey and Tuthill streets. Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots, which some initially mistook for firecrackers. The neighborhood, generally considered quiet, was filled with a significant number of young people at the time of the shooting, according to witnesses.
Despite the initial investigation and the collection of evidence from the scene, which included cordoning off the area and a search that lasted through the night, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years following Lequan Young's death. Law enforcement officials encouraged anyone with information to come forward, but the case has since gone cold, leaving the fatal shooting unsolved.
