On the evening of Halloween in 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on Maplewood Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut, forever altering the lives of two families. David Belle, a 28-year-old Black man, was standing outside a barbershop he was planning to open when the shooting occurred. Alongside him was 41-year-old Myoshi Bagley, a hairstylist who was going to work with him.
In the sudden violence that erupted, both were struck by bullets.
The initial moments after the shooting were chaotic. Both Belle and Bagley were rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center. Bagley, a mother of two, succumbed to her injuries that night. Belle, having been shot multiple times, clung to life. For a week, he bravely fought, undergoing extensive surgeries as his family hoped for a recovery. Tragically, on November 6, 2018, David Belle also passed away from his injuries.
Bridgeport police quickly launched a homicide investigation, believing that Belle was the intended target of the shooting. They determined that the shots were fired from the passenger side of a green Mazda MPV minivan. In an effort to generate leads, the police released surveillance video footage of the suspect vehicle to the public, appealing for any information that could help identify those responsible for the double homicide.
Despite the video evidence and public appeals for information, the investigation has not led to any arrests in the years following the tragic deaths of David Belle and Myoshi Bagley. The case remains a painful and unresolved chapter for their families and the Bridgeport community. The loss of a young man on the cusp of realizing his dream of opening a business, and a beloved mother, left a lasting scar on the city.
