On a crisp December evening in 2018, just a week before Christmas, the life of 12-year-old Clinton Howell was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. The young Black boy had just returned from a quick trip to a corner store in his Bridgeport, Connecticut neighborhood, his pockets likely filled with snacks, when he was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting right outside his Willow Street home on December 18th.
He was struck by gunfire and rushed to Bridgeport Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, becoming the city's 11th homicide victim of the year.
The investigation swiftly revealed that Clinton was an innocent bystander, not the intended target of the attack. The shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute, reportedly fueled by a social media feud, between a group of teenagers and Clinton's older cousin, who was with him at the time. According to police, a stolen SUV carrying four individuals passed by the house multiple times. After Clinton's cousin fired a pellet gun at the vehicle, the SUV turned around, and shots were fired from the back window, striking Clinton.
Within days, law enforcement made several arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Tajay Chambers, 16-year-old Alexander Bolanos, a 14-year-old, and a 12-year-old. Chambers was identified as the shooter and faced a string of charges, including murder with special circumstances. Bolanos was identified as the driver of the vehicle and was also charged with conspiracy to commit murder. The two younger teens also faced charges. Chambers, a Jamaican national, was reportedly in the United States illegally at the time of the incident.
In the years that followed, the wheels of justice turned. In December 2022, Tajay Chambers was sentenced to 32 years in prison for his role in Clinton's death. His charges were reportedly reduced from murder to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm. In August 2023, Alexander Bolanos, the driver, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During his sentencing, Bolanos expressed remorse for his actions. The tragic death of Clinton Howell, a boy remembered by his family and teachers as a happy child who loved video games and riding his bike, left a lasting scar on the Bridgeport community and served as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence.
